Pathway Trace (2019)

Embarking on a visual journey nearly three decades after the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the traumatic Bosnian War, this project sought to explore and, in some cases, challenge or affirm the perceptions of Serbia and its people. The complex and foreign reality of Serbia sparked curiosity, prompting a deeper investigation into a community still deeply influenced by the echoes of historic and formative events that remain vivid in living memory. Inspired by the approach used in previous Eastern European projects, the narrative of the images was shaped by a combination of personal experience and the atmosphere of the region.

The resulting images serve as reflective pieces, contemplating the intricate dimensions of national identity and self-perception among those captured in Serbia. The project also delves into questions about identity and the future from the perspective of a citizen of the U.K., a nation navigating its own path of distancing itself from the European Union and its neighbors.

The focus of the work lies in exploring the lives and viewpoints of individuals who exist within environments shaped by authoritative forces, which have molded their understanding of identity and existence. This exploration highlights the impact of those authorities whose actions may, at times, conflict with personal, political, or moral belief systems. Through this visual journey, the aim is to uncover the stories embedded in the complex fabric of human experience, shaped by the tumultuous currents of history and identity.
